How to Track QR Code Scans on a Flyer
Why Track QR Code Scans on Flyers?
You printed 500 flyers. You distributed them across coffee shops, community boards, and local events. But how do you know if they're working?
Without tracking, a QR code on a flyer is a black box. You have no idea if anyone scanned it, when they scanned it, or where the flyer was when it happened.
Tracked QR codes change everything. Instead of encoding a direct URL, a tracked QR code routes through a redirect layer that logs every scan before sending the person to your destination.
What Data Can You Track?
With QRbuild's tracking (coming in Pro), every scan captures:
- Scan count — total and unique scans
- Timestamp — when each scan happened
- Location — city and country of the scanner
- Device — mobile vs desktop, iOS vs Android
- Referrer — how the scanner found your QR code
This means you can answer questions like:
- Which coffee shop location drove the most scans?
- Do people scan on weekday mornings or weekend evenings?
- Are my flyers reaching the right geographic area?

Print Tips for Scannable QR Codes
- Minimum size: 2cm x 2cm (0.8" x 0.8") for close-range scanning
- Contrast: Dark foreground on light background. Test before bulk printing
- Quiet zone: Leave white space around the QR code — at least 4 modules wide
- Test scan: Always test the printed QR code before distributing
Scan Rate Benchmarks
Based on industry data, here's what to expect:
- Direct mail flyers: 2-5% scan rate
- Event handouts: 8-15% scan rate
- In-store signage: 5-10% scan rate
- Community boards: 1-3% scan rate
If your scan rates are below these ranges, experiment with:
- A stronger call-to-action near the QR code
- Better placement on the flyer (top half performs better)
- Offering an incentive ("Scan for 10% off")
